Scanned PDF workflow

Translate scanned PDFs with OCR

Upload a scanned or image-based PDF, recognize its text, review the detected blocks, and translate the content into one of the supported languages before export.

Useful for

Scanned research papers, supplier documents, manuals, and other PDFs whose text cannot be selected or copied.

Before you start

Sign-in is required. Blurry scans, handwriting, complex tables, unusual fonts, and password-protected PDFs may need manual review or preprocessing.

How the OCR translation workflow works

Use this workflow when the page is an image and ordinary PDF text extraction cannot produce reliable, selectable text.

  1. 1

    Upload the scanned PDF

Sign in, choose the image-based PDF, and select the source and target languages. Use the regular translator instead when the document already contains clean selectable text.

  2. 2

    Recognize text and layout

OCR detects text blocks, reading order, tables, and page regions. Scan quality and document structure affect what can be recognized.

  3. 3

    Review the detected blocks

Compare the source page with the workbench result. Correct names, numbers, headings, and reading order before relying on a translation.

  4. 4

    Translate and export

Translate the reviewed content, inspect the final pages, and generate PDF, Markdown, or HTML output for the next stage of your work.

What to review

Check names, dates, measurements, table cells, footnotes, stamps, and text near page edges. Legal, academic, and financial documents should always be compared with the source.

Available outputs

The workbench can generate PDF, Markdown, and HTML. Layout is retained where technically possible, but complex tables, unusual fonts, and low-resolution scans can require editing.

Account and file handling

File processing requires sign-in and tasks are separated by account. Documents and stored objects are normally scheduled for deletion after about seven days, subject to the published privacy policy and legal exceptions.

OCR PDF translation questions

When should I use OCR instead of the regular PDF translator?

Use OCR when text cannot be selected or copied because each page is a scan or image. For a digital PDF with embedded text, start with the regular translator.

Can OCR accurately read handwriting and complex tables?

Results vary with image quality, handwriting style, table borders, and reading order. Treat these areas as review points rather than assuming they were reproduced perfectly.

Which formats can I download from the OCR workbench?

After recognition and translation, the workbench can prepare PDF, Markdown, and HTML exports. Review the generated file before publishing or sharing it.

Do I need an account, and how long are files kept?

You must sign in to upload and process files. Documents and related objects are normally retained for about seven days before scheduled deletion, with details and exceptions described in the privacy policy.
